Applying for a Home Mortgage

There are four main steps when applying for your Boston home mortgage.  These steps are crucial to getting you on your way to home ownership and determining how much you can afford to spend on your new home.

Step 1 – The first step in applying for a home mortgage is referred to as the "discover process."  This is the process of doing the necessary research to determine how much you can afford to spend on a new home.  You can do much of this research online and utilize the many home mortgage payment calculators to determine what your expenses are and how much you can afford to spend based on your current expenses.

Step 2 – Prequalifying for your home mortgage is the next step.  You will want to search and compare the home mortgage lenders in your area.  You will also want to consider the bank that you already have your checking and savings accounts with, as they already know you and have an idea of your character.  Also, it does not hurt to prequalify with more than one lender; in fact, you can prequalify with four different lenders and choose the one that you get the best deal from.  Once you've found the lender you want, set up an appointment with them.  They will then be able to assist you in determining how much house you can afford.  This is also a good time to see the different loan options available to you.

Step 3 – The third step is to complete your home mortgage application.  Mortgage applications are available online and you will also receive one from your lender.  These will require you to provide information about your income as well as your expenses.  You will also sign a release allowing the lender to check your credit.

Step 4 – The final step is to get pre-approved.  This will confirm your credit and approve you for a loan.  Pre-approval is great because it gives you an idea of how much house you can afford and it also speeds up the process of purchasing your home once you find the Boston home for you.

The process of applying for a Boston home mortgage may sound like a long one, but it also takes time to find your dream home.  You can always begin house searching throughout this process and this will assist you in narrowing down the amount you can spend on a new home.
