Homeowners Insurance: Do I Really Need It?
A home is the largest, single investment most people will make in their lives. Protecting that investment with a good homeowner's insurance policy only makes sense. You don't have to have it, no one is forcing you to get homeowners insurance, but what will you do if something happens to your home? Nature has a way of being fickle; things can and do happen to people's homes, and while it's tragic, if they have homeowners insurance, it won't be as bad as it could be.
Homeowners insurance covers more than just your home. It also covers your possessions and your assets. All those things that you accrue through life, that you store in your home, like t.v.'s, DVD players, computers, books, CD's…well, you get the picture, all those things will be damaged if something happens to your home. A homeowner's insurance policy will help you replace those things if they are damaged or destroyed. Lastly, if someone is injured on your property, or a fire damages a neighbor's home or property, you may be held legally liable. A homeowners insurance policy will help protect your assets in the event you are slapped with a lawsuit and lose.
Homeowner's insurance policies are not all created equal, though. There are different rates and different options available to homeowners. You can get different amounts of coverage and completely customize your homeowner's insurance policy to suit your financial needs. If you want more coverage, that can be increased as well.
It's recommended that homeowners contact their insurance company once per year to make sure that their insurance is up to date. This is especially important for possession and asset protection. You may get a lower payment when starting out in your home by choosing a policy that only covers 50% of your possessions' value, but as you become more financially secure, you can upgrade that to fair market value replacement. You can also increase the amount of liability coverage. This will better protect you in case someone sues you.
Derrick Johnson, from Boston, Massachusetts, found himself in need of a good homeowner's insurance policy. He checked around with some of the national insurance companies, but then checked a little harder. He found better rates with a local insurance agent and is much happier.
Homeowners insurance is an important thing to have for anyone who owns a home. You can also get it in the form of renter's insurance and homeowners insurance on condominiums. These will protect your possessions and your assets even though you don't technically own the home.
